Pernambuco
Located among the states of Ceará and Paraíba (north), Piauí (west) and Bahia and Alagoas (south), it embraces an area of 101.023 sq kilometers divided into 177 cities and 19 micron regions.
The state has the charming art of handcrafting. Famous for its wood carving art of landscape’s pictures and carrancas (sculptures with a terrifying appearance placed in the prows of the boats to drive away the bad spirits of the river San Francisco). Handmade handcrafted rugs, hammocks and blankets woven in manual machines, and the leather footwear production are other atractions.
The carnival is one of the main popular parties, attracting crowds to the sound of carnival and maracatu musics. The state is the third cookering pole of Brazil. Its cookery was influenced by the Blacks, Europeans and the local Indians.
Pernambuco is responsible for 95% of the manufactured plaster production in Brazil, standing out in this sector. The state has got enough gipsita reservations for up to 500 years of exploration. The Plaster Pole of Araripe has 312 companies (21 mines, 61 calcium factories, and 230 prefabricated concrete blocks factories) that produce and transform 1.8 million tonnes of plaster a year. The state is also the second medical pole of Brazil, with 320 hospitals among other local benefits.
